The Spring, Summer and Fall can be crazy times of year for Texans and their allergies. Some Texas children and adults have severe allergies that require constant prescription medication. However, most people self-medicate with over the counter medications for the mild to moderate symptom. What many don’t know Is that one of the most common side effects from these allergy medications is dry mouth. A dry mouth is the perfect environment for cavities to grow and thrive. In fact research has shown that people who suffer from a dry mouth can be 5-10 times more likely to have dental decay!
So what can you do? Here are 4 Tips to keep your runny nose from causing cavities:
1 – Hydrate – At least 6-8 glasses of water daily when on meds. Kids need it as much as adults.
2 – Brush after each meal – Brushing eliminates much of the bacteria that cause odors and cavities in a drier mouth.
3 – Mouth Rinse – Use only non-alcohol mouth rinses as alcohol based ones can increase the dryness.
4 – Use a Neti Pot – If you have not tried this, you should! It can be quite an experience at first, but rinsing sinuses daily on a consistent basis, using warm water & a bit of baking soda, can decrease inflammation naturally and prevent dry mouth.
Good luck to all who suffer when the pollen is out! Keep those teeth safe!
