Halloween has come and gone and for many that means a big bag of candy just waiting to be eaten. This thought can make every cavity-conscious parent cringe and rightly so! We are all pretty aware that an increase in candy correlates with an increase in potential cavities. Did you know that same bag of candy can cause your child to have super stinky breath too? Bad breath has a number of causes, but one of the big ones is bacteria in the mouth and bacteria LOVES sugar to help it grow.
Additional causes of bad breath include:
- Oral Hygiene – Plaque on teeth and bacteria on tongue create a stinky combo!
- Dry Mouth – Saliva cleanses the mouth. Less saliva = more bacteria. Causes of dry mouth can include mouth breathing due to seasonal allergies, illness. Certain medications can also decrease saliva and create a drier mouth.
- Infection or Illness – Infections of the sinus, tonsils and throat are definite contributors. In addition cavities, mouth sores and having oral surgery can increase bad breath.
- Foreign Object in the Nose! Totally gross – but this is a common cause of stinky breath, especially in toddlers.
Solutions! The great news is that fighting stinky candy breath – and all bad breath – can be as easy as 1 – 2 – 3!
1 – Brush teeth for 2 minutes; 2 times a day
2 – Brush that tongue!
3 – Floss to eliminate food between teeth that can cause bacteria to grow
